From the New Edition of In the Shadow of the Angel:
To mask her emptiness, Antonieta filled her nights with diversion. A circle of Spanish writers, actors, poets, headed by Federico Garcia Lorca, was an oasis from the Mexican group.

Antonieta walks with Frederico García Lorca, 1929
She felt safe with these men, like her Contemporaneos. She could let herself go, feel the pulse of the cabarets, the magnificent Harlem Negro reviews, bawdy cabarets in Greenwich Village, movies, theater, dinners that lasted until three in the morning, or nights at Federico’s, when he would play the piano and mimic every accent in Spain. Then home on the subway, exhausted, to sleep at last.
